Your nails are an excellent indicator of your body’s overall health, particularly when it comes to whether or not we have an iron deficiency.
An indication that you have iron deficiency is the development of “spoon nails”. So what do we mean when we say, “spoon nails”? Well, it usually manifests in a depression in the nail that gives the nail a somewhat spoon-shaped appearance. Illustrated below is a clearer look of this occurrence in the body.
Iron deficiency is a common cause for spoon nails, and this, in turn, is the result of either a diet that lacks proper amounts of iron, or a more complicated health issue. In instances of the second case, it is highly recommended to consult your doctor who will be able to perform the proper tests and examinations to get you back into shape.
If you do not have a serious health issue, but find you are lacking your diet is lacking iron, you can do something right now to aid in the prevention of an iron deficiency, by eating an iron-rich diet.

- Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach
- Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots
- Iron-fortified cereals, breads, and pastas
