What are some important and generalizable life lessons?

life lessons through experiences/patients:

1.  When you're dying, the main thing that matters is who's at your side. People that die in peace are the ones who have had meaningful, fulfilling personal relationships. I've seen very uni-dimensional successful career-persons (academia, business, etc) struggle, wishing they had spent more time building relationships.

2.  Keep the people you love close to you, and let them know how much they mean to you.  Happiness comes from the small shared moments of love each day. (personal losses)

3.  Hard work is the best way to success and a feeling of fulfillment.

4.  The best way to help people is to help them help themselves. (from working in post-conflict African countries)

5.  "For women, beauty and intelligence is fine and all, but strength and resilience will keep me living well." (from an 85yr old woman)

6.  Life's often not fair, but there are always things to keep people going. A bright outlook and supportive relationships can change life trajectories.

7.  Don't let fear limit your life.  Planes, bridges, sleeping away from your Mom, commitment... all add value to your life :)
